Cyrill of Alexandria

Following a lengthy discourse, a succinct address is presented, illustrating the gravity of divine judgment and offering insight into the king, who exercises rightful authority in affirming the decree. The weight of this decree may, if you will, pertain to Somnan the householder; however, if we broaden our perspective to include the priests governed by the law, then we should interpret it as we have elucidated. Those who believed they were secure in eternal blessedness—viewing themselves as firmly planted in the realm of faith—fell from grace and forfeited their rightful honor, as no one came to their aid or could lift those already cast down, as the Lord proclaimed. For if He has barred access to men, who, as He states, can possibly open it (Job 12:14)?

Ephraem the Syrian

4th centuryChurch Father

On that day, the firmly anchored nail will be shattered; in other words, Somnan will cease to exist when Eliakim assumes his role.
