The peace we experience signifies the complete anointing by the Holy Spirit. As the wise John notes, ‘You also have an anointing from the Holy One, and you do not require anyone to teach you, but that anointing itself teaches you all things (1 John 2:20, 27).’ We receive this anointing primarily during the sacred rite of baptism, through which we are entrusted with the gift of the Holy Spirit. Furthermore, it is essential to share this message with every nation, for this guidance encompasses all peoples. The ancient law and the ministry that arose from it, established through the agency of angels, was given solely to Israel in a physical sense.

In contrast, grace in Christ, a calling grounded in faith, along with the sanctifying work of the Spirit and the holy sacrament (Eucharist) as ordained by God the Father, is extended to all nations. Indeed, Christ, as affirmed by the words of the Holy One, is the hope for all tongues.

The countenance of the sovereign who governs all nations shall be annihilated upon this mountain. While the prophet specifically mentions Sennacherib, he simultaneously alludes to the adversary. The spiritual interpretation consistently intertwines with the historical context. The prophecies regarding the past and future of the people of Judah possess a profound connection to the mission of the Church of Christ, God’s Providence for the righteous, and the judgement of the unrighteous.

Death will ultimately be vanquished forever, and the Sovereign Lord will remove the sorrow from every countenance, taking away the disgrace of His people from all the earth, as the Lord has declared. It is not surprising that death is referred to as a ruler, for the blessed apostle observed that death reigned from Adam until Moses, even over those who had not sinned in the same manner as Adam (Rom. 5:14). The term ruler over all nations or the darkness that enshrouds them, as well as the veil cast over all peoples, is often interpreted to refer to the Antichrist, who is destined to be defeated on the Mount of Eleioi, as explained in Daniel’s final vision.

According to the Septuagint, a joyful feast is prepared on Mount Zion for all nations, where they will partake of the wine promised by the Lord to share with His saints in the Father’s kingdom (Matthew 20; Luke 22) and will be anointed with holy oil, so they may be rejuvenated in Christ and transformed into a new people. Therefore, it is proclaimed that all these gifts are to be given to the nations, all that Israel once experienced in shadow and type. This is the decree of the Lord, that these blessings should be bestowed upon the Gentiles; for death has been swallowed up (1 Cor. 15), every tear has been wiped away, and the disgrace of the entire world will be obliterated after the establishment of Christ's kingdom.

Upon receiving this sacred anointing, you are designated as Christians, which affirms the essence of your rebirth. Prior to receiving this grace, you were not genuinely deserving of this title, though you aspired to embody the Christian spirit. It is important to understand that this anointing has its roots in the Old Testament. When Moses conveyed God's command to his brother and appointed him as high priest, he anointed him with water. Thus, he was designated as an anointed one, a meaning connected to the anointing of instruction. Similarly, Solomon, when established as king, was consecrated by the Hierarch after being cleansed in Gion. However, these events were mere foreshadowings. In your case, the reality is profound, for you are truly anointed by the Holy Spirit.

The foundation of your salvation is Christ, who serves as the beginning; you are the dough. If the foundation is holy, it follows that holiness will permeate the dough. Guard this anointing with integrity, as it represents sanctification—a spiritual safeguard for the body and salvation for the soul. The prophet Isaiah prophesied about this long ago: The Lord of hosts will establish this mountain for all nations, referring to the Church as the mountain, as he articulates elsewhere: The mountain of the Lord will be unveiled in the latter days. They will partake in wine, savor joy, and anoint themselves with peace. Furthermore, to affirm this, listen to his words concerning the world as mysterious: He will eradicate the veil that shrouds all nations and the covering that rests upon all tribes.

They will experience no hunger (Rev. 7:16), for they partake in the true bread of life: I am the living bread that came down from heaven (John 6:51), declared the Lord. They shall also suffer no thirst, for they are filled from a cup so magnificent that it is as if the Truth proclaimed concerning them: He that believeth in Me shall never thirst (John 6:35); and likewise, and whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst for ever: but the water that I shall give him shall become in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life (John 4:14). The sun shall not set upon them, nor will they endure the lethal effects of heat.

God spoke through Isaiah to His Church, saying, Hope against the storm, a shadow against the heat, indicating that the protection of His mysteries would be present there, ensuring that nothing could be consumed by the fires of temptation. For the Lamb who stands in the center of the throne shall tend to them (Rev. 7:17). Previously, it was proclaimed that the Lamb seated on the throne possessed the scroll (Rev. 5:1-10), but now it is revealed that the Lamb who is in the midst of the throne shall shepherd them, signifying that the Father and the Son share a unified throne, as the Father is present in the Son and the Son in the Father, that is, in the heart of the Church, where, through faith, God, who is wholly One and yet Triune, resides.

They will be blessed with peace. While these words might suggest a literal application to anointing with fragrant oils used during celebrations, they also allude to the deeper spiritual experience described in the previous verse—the enjoyment of spiritual blessings. In this context, the anointing signifies the grace of the Holy Spirit, which is imparted through the sacrament of anointing as taught within the Christian Church, mirroring the outpouring that occurred upon the Apostles in the upper room of Zion. All languages and peoples will be partakers of this divine grace, a truth that the Lord commands the prophet to declare as His eternal decree, for from all eternity, the Lord has destined to gather all nations into the body of Christ’s Church.
