John Chrysostom
I affirm by My own being: from My mouth flows truth. Was it necessary to invoke a solemn pledge for those who listened to have faith? Paul attests to this, indicating that they might possess the profound encouragement of the call to everlasting life (cf. Heb. 6:11-12). The word stands immutable. The Jews experienced great honor when God manifested their triumph, while simultaneously, their foes faced great humiliation, for they not only surpassed the servants, but they also saw themselves rejecting their very masters. Every tongue shall take an oath by Me, and every tongue shall give glory to God. Paul refers to those in the realm of the dead. When did this occur, O Jews? Clearly, it has been fulfilled in us. When did every knee bow before God, if you turn away from Him even after your return from exile? He does not state, ‘they will become,’ but rather, ‘Every knee shall bow before Me.’ Earlier, He demonstrated the same truth: If I have created the earth, it is evident that I am the Sovereign of the universe. Every tongue shall take an oath by Me, and every tongue shall give glory to God. This signifies true piety. He states, With the Lord alone shall truth and might be proclaimed concerning Me; all who harbor animosity against Him shall come and be humiliated (Isaiah 45:24). In what manner will every knee bow when there are those who have forsaken Him? Many of those who have distanced themselves from the Lord will experience shame, while all will be exalted by God, though none will be honored with Him through worldly means.
