When they fast I will not hear their prayers: and if they offer holocausts and victims, I will not receive them: for I will consume them by the sword, and by famine, and by the pestilence.

John Chrysostom

When they observe fasting, I will not listen: Fasting carries great significance, yet consider the nature of their fasts. What does Isaiah proclaim? For disputes and conflicts, you fast; but why do you fast on My behalf (Isaiah 58:4)? True fasting goes beyond simply refraining from food; it involves a spiritual abstinence of the heart. Just as virginity is not merely the absence of marriage, but is defined by purity and a devoted focus on the Lord, so too is fasting. The people of Nineveh also fasted, yet their merit with God did not stem from this practice. Instead, it was their turning away from sin that garnered divine favor. What benefit is there in refraining from consuming the flesh of animals, while indulging in violence against fellow humans?

To abstain from wine, yet be consumed by a yearning for wealth? This form of intoxication is far more harmful; it does not allow for rest, but rather intensifies with the dawn. I will not heed their cries for help, for their transgressions outweigh their prayers. I will bring destruction upon them with the sword, fire, and plague. Famine is one affliction, the sword another, and death yet another; it is conceivable to perish, not merely from hunger or defeat, but through a death ordained by God.

Jerome of Stridon

4th centuryChurch Father

The Lord instructed me not to intercede for this people for their benefit. Even when they observe fasts, I will not attend to their petitions, and should they present burnt offerings and sacrifices, I will not accept them. I will bring destruction upon them through the sword, famine, and pestilence. It is unwise to pray for one who has sinned unto death, as stated in the words of John: There is sin unto death; I say let him not pray for that (John 5:16). While all unrighteousness is sin, some sin does not lead to death.

Fasts, prayers, sacrifices, and burnt offerings are meaningful when we distance ourselves from our failings and legitimately grieve for our past transgressions; however, if we persist in our sins and believe we can atone for ourselves through vows and offerings, we are deeply mistaken, underestimating God’s justice. For those destined for the sword, famine, and pestilence cannot be saved by any prayer; hence, the prophet is advised not to pray in futility for something he cannot obtain.
