John Chrysostom

4th centuryChurch Father

The start - v. 15 Put an end to them, and may your word bring me joy and gladness to my heart, for I bear your name. This means that I do not seek revenge. Hence, I aim to be a genuine and righteous prophet, for it is impossible for someone who invokes your name to deceive. Notice that again I am concerned for your name. I am recognized as a prophet. In order to protect your glory, I have endured great suffering. I have offered no assistance; rather, I have acted in the opposite manner.

Jerome of Stridon

O Lord, remember and visit me, and safeguard me from those who oppress me. Do not let me be destroyed because of Your patience; I have endured humiliation for Your sake. Your words have been discovered, and I have embraced them. As for those who mock Your words, bring destruction upon them. Your word has been a source of joy and delight to my heart, for Your name is invoked upon me, O Lord God of Hosts. Blessed are those whose conscience is steadfast in enduring disgrace for the sake of God. Thus, it is said, Your words have been found that You have spoken through my lips. I have embraced them, turning them into a source of gladness for me, which before were detestable. Likewise, the Babylonians recognize the fulfillment of what Jeremiah predicted for the future. The essence is that I have faced adversities and suffered persecution from those who oppose me; yet, I rejoice in having fulfilled Your commands and enduring persecution for Your name's sake.

Theodoret of Cyrus

Because they believe my prophecies are false and trust the assurances of false prophets, show the truth of my words through actions to bring me solace. The Prophet declares that he did not share in their feast or their merriment, choosing instead to prioritize the reverence of God above all else, continually mourning their dishonesty and the impending judgment upon them.
