One Church Father comments on this verse

Jerome of Stridon

4th centuryChurch Father

If they inquire, "Where shall we go?" you should respond, "Thus says the LORD: Those destined for death shall die; those meant for the sword shall meet the sword; those facing hunger shall experience hunger; and those who are to be taken captive will be taken captive. I will bring upon them four judgments, declares the Lord: a sword for slaughter, dogs for mauling, and birds of the air and beasts of the earth to consume and annihilate. The four afflictions destined for the people of Judah are revealed in Ezekiel’s prophecy: the sword, plague, famine, and captivity. Among the beasts, we include the dogs and birds of the air, whose fate it is to tear, consume, and destroy the corpses. It is inevitable that all creation will rise against those who sin, having scorned their Creator.
