Jerome of Stridon
I will bring ruin upon the assembly of Judah and Jerusalem in this location, and I will strike them down with the sword in the presence of their foes, and at the hands of those who desire their destruction. Their lifeless forms I will expose to the birds of the heavens and the beasts of the earth for consumption, and I will turn this city into a source of dread and ridicule. Every traveler that passes through it will be astonished and will whistle at all its calamities. I will provide them with the flesh of their sons and daughters to eat; each individual shall consume the flesh of his neighbor amid the siege and the distress imposed upon them by their adversaries and those who seek their lives.

While we recognize that similar events transpired during the Babylonian captivity, this also more profoundly points to the time of the Savior, when they were surrounded by Vespasian and Titus, and their city fell into perpetual disgrace in the days of Hadrian. Those who had sacrificed their children to idols ultimately resorted to consuming them out of hunger, with their bodies offered to the birds of the sky and the animals of the land. Those who misused the blessings of the Lord for iniquity and crushed the fruit of their wombs before idols, turning their wombs into tombs for their offspring.
