The Church Fathers on this verse

One Church Father comments on this verse

Jerome of Stridon

4th centuryChurch Father

I will bring destruction upon the counsel of Judah and Jerusalem in this location, eliminating them with the sword in front of their adversaries, along with the hands of those who pursue their lives; I will leave their lifeless forms for the birds of the air and the beasts of the earth to consume, turning this city into a site of dread and ridicule. Those who pass by it will be astonished, overwhelmed by all its calamities. I will provide them with the flesh of their sons and daughters, as each man will feast upon the flesh of his neighbor during the siege and the distress they experience at the hands of their enemies and those who pursue their lives.

While we recognize that such horrors occurred during the Babylonian captivity, they more profoundly pertain to the period of the Savior, when they suffered under the siege of Vespasian and Titus, leading to the city's eternal humiliation in the time of Hadrian. The very ones who once sacrificed their children to idols, out of dire hunger, resorted to consuming their own offspring, and the corpses of all were left to the birds of the sky and the beasts of the field. Those who misused the Lord's gifts for their wickedness and sacrificed the fruit of their womb to idols converted their wombs into graves for their children.
