John Chrysostom
This is the declaration of the Lord: ‘I am transforming you. Although they seek to withdraw, I will contend alongside you.’
Thus saith the Lord, the God of Israel: Behold I will turn back the weapons of war that are in your hands, and with which you fight against the king of Babylon, and the Chaldeans, that besiege you round about the walls: and I will gather them together in the midst of this city.

This is the declaration of the Lord: ‘I am transforming you. Although they seek to withdraw, I will contend alongside you.’
Jeremiah responded that the Lord would bring ruin upon the unrighteous for the transgressions that had been noted previously, particularly for their mistreatment of the vulnerable and impoverished, whom the Jews were actively exploiting and afflicting.
Jeremiah conveyed to them the message for Zedekiah, stating that the Lord God of Israel declared He would turn the weapons of warfare that you wield against the king of Babylon and the Chaldeans who surround you. He would bring these very instruments into the heart of the city and conduct warfare against you with His mighty power and fierce wrath. The inhabitants of this city would face destruction, as both humans and livestock would perish from a severe plague. Despite any efforts to resist the besieging Chaldeans and to prepare for battle, your defenses will be futile; you can only brandish your weapons within the city walls.
Yet, amid this siege, I will oppose you with my outstretched arm and overwhelming strength, unleashing my fierce anger and wrath, leading to the demise of all who dwell here from famine and disease. This prophecy came to pass, as the city fell after a siege marked by neither resistance nor battle—only captivity ensued, and there were none left to defeat. Ultimately, those who perished by the sword were far fewer than those who succummed to hunger.
Thus declares the Sovereign Lord of Israel. Behold, I will transform the instruments of conflict that you wield, and with these, you shall battle against the ruler of Babylon and the Chaldeans who have encamped around you beyond the city walls. I will bring these matters into the heart of this city. Furthermore, I will contend against you with an outstretched hand and a mighty arm, filled with intense anger, fury, and profound wrath. This signifies that your arms will prove ineffective, for I am the commander of your opponents, and with them, I shall wage war against you. He then declares that He will deliver you all to famine, death, and captivity, and He will also surrender King Zedekiah to the guards and soldiers, who will kill some and imprison others. God instructs the people to proclaim the following:
