2 Church Fathers comment on this verse

Ephraem the Syrian

4th centuryChurch Father

Their voice resembles the roaring sea, a tumultuous ocean stirred by storms, where the waves surge and create a clamor driven by fierce winds, crashing into one another and producing a dreadful sound.

Jerome of Stridon

4th centuryChurch Father

The Lord declares, Look, a nation approaches from the north, and a powerful people will arise from the farthest reaches of the earth. They will wield the bow and shield; they will be fierce and unyielding, showing no compassion; their roar will echo like the waves of the sea, and they will charge forth on horseback, unified as one, to battle against you, O daughter of Zion. This prophecy speaks of the Babylonians who will march against Jerusalem, depicting the array of armed invaders, so that those struck by fear may turn back and seek the mercy of God. It serves as a call to intercede with Him in times of adversity, O daughter of Zion. We can draw strength from this witness during periods of suffering, when the full force of evil surrounds us, with no reprieve, and our foes surge forward like the mightiest ocean waves.
