John Chrysostom
Avoid venturing into the fields. This refers to a state of siege. Observe how, in a brief span, it subtly leads to disaster.
Go not out into the fields, nor walk in the highway: for the sword of the enemy, and fear is on every side.
2 Church Fathers comment on this verse
Avoid venturing into the fields. This refers to a state of siege. Observe how, in a brief span, it subtly leads to disaster.
Do not venture into the fields or stroll along the roads, for the enemy’s sword brings fear in all directions. The Gospel instructs us not to enter the fields or descend from the heights of rooftops but rather to seek refuge in the mountains, as noted in Matthew 24. Here, we find further exhortations to escape and elevate ourselves in the words of Isaiah and Micah, specifically Isaiah 2 and Micah 4. In a more direct context, the Jewish people are urged not to abandon the city or its protective walls but to stand firm and defend themselves with the strongest defenses.
