The Church Fathers on this verse

One Church Father comments on this verse

John Chrysostom

4th centuryChurch Father

What is truly remarkable is that the Lord bestowed all of this upon us prior to the promise and before the conflict has concluded. When the Israelites entered the promised land, they faced battles that they could have avoided. By simply obeying God, they could have taken possession of all the cities without the need for weapons or armies. For example, their victory at Jericho was achieved in a manner more celebratory than combative. However, as we journey into the promised land, which signifies heaven, there is no requirement for strife. Such struggles persist only while we remain in the wilderness, or in our current earthly existence. ‘For whoever has entered into His rest has also rested from his own works, just as God rested from His own’ (Heb. 4:10). ‘And let us not grow weary in doing good’ (Gal. 6:9), for in due time, we shall reap if we do not lose heart.
