For an extended period, the Jewish nation found themselves subjected to the oppression of the Philistines, having lost the essence of the faith that had once led their ancestors to victory. Nonetheless, they had not completely forfeited the mark of their divine election or the hope of the promised inheritance. During periods of peace, the people frequently experienced elevation, yet God allowed them to fall into the hands of their foes so that they might look heavenward for rescue from their distress. It is inherent to human nature to reach out to God amid trials while complacency often ensnares the mind in times of success. This tendency has been demonstrated repeatedly, though the shift in the fortunes of the Jews and Philistines stands out as a particularly striking example.
