Ambrose of Milan

4th centuryChurch Father

As he who was proclaimed by divine signs from above reached adulthood, he began to contemplate marriage. It is possible that his spirit was seeking to distance itself from the burdensome passions typical of youth, or perhaps this pursuit provided him with an opportunity to challenge the dominion of the Philistines and deliver his people from their severe oppression. Upon arriving in Phimnatha, a city inhabited by the Philistines at that time, he beheld a maiden of remarkable beauty in both stature and features, and he requested her parents, who were accompanying him, to grant her hand in marriage.
