2 Church Fathers comment on this verse

Jerome of Stridon

4th centuryChurch Father

Everyone pursued their own interests rather than God's, and they did not follow the path of the Lord, as stated in Philippians 2. It is written, “Ask what is the way of goodness, and walk in it” (Jer. 6:16), yet as described in the book of Judges, “There is no king in Israel; everyone did what was right in his own eyes.”

Theodoret of Cyrus

5th centuryChurch Father

The author also clarifies the reason for wrongdoing. He states, ‘In those days there was no king in Israel; every man did what was right in his own eyes.’ Such powerlessness leads to great damage!
