The Church Fathers on this verse

One Church Father comments on this verse

Ambrose of Milan

4th centuryChurch Father

With great courage, they charged into battle, but heeding the counsel of the more discerning, they altered their course of action. They resolved not to engage the citizens in warfare but to first address the wrongdoing through dialogue, proposing terms for the offenders. It was deemed unjust for the transgressions of a few to bring repercussions upon all, as the misdeeds of the young could jeopardize the safety of the entire community. Hence, they dispatched messengers to the inhabitants of Gibeah, demanding the surrender of the guilty parties, warning that to defend such an offense was tantamount to participating in it.
