The Church Fathers on this verse

Judges 21:22Meaning & Commentary from the Church Fathers

And when their fathers and their brethren shall come, and shall begin to complain against you, and to chide, we will say to them: Have pity on them: for they took them not away as by the right of war or conquest, but when they asked to have them, you gave them not, and the fault was committed on your part.

The Church Fathers on this verse

One Church Father comments on this verse

Ambrose of Milan

4th centuryChurch Father

If the parents of the daughters sought retribution, they would find some satisfaction, in part through persuasion, and in part through accusations of vulnerability, for they recognized that the men of Benjamin were without wives, yet they ventured forth with their daughters. The tribe of Benjamin no longer deserves punishment, but rather mercy. A sufficient amount of wrath had already been unleashed upon them, and far too many lives had been lost in conflict. The crowd had become excessively enraged, desiring to sever their lineage and eradicate them completely. However, it did not please God for an entire tribe of His people to be lost, nor for them to suffer such harsh consequences because of the actions of one woman.
