Observe, then, how the divine law graciously relieves us from accusations of such offenses, and with compassion purifies those who, due to human frailty, endure nearly burdensome involuntary sins. It states: ‘If a man or a woman have spots on the skin of their body, spots white, and the priest shall see that the spots on their skin are pale white, it is a lichen which has blossomed on the skin: it is clean’ (Lev. 13:38-39). Although a thorough examination reveals that this lichen is indeed a skin ailment, akin to leprosy, it is not entirely linked with mortification and retains an element of hope. Similarly, the offenses that befall us, while clearly faults, do not fully lead to the death and ruin of the soul.

Our Judge approaches His assessment with a measure of leniency, ‘For He knows our composition’ (Psalms 102:14), and He understands the limitations of our nature. Thus, He extends forgiveness in accordance with His inherent compassion. Hence, it can be inferred that one who experiences loss is deemed 'clean.'
