If one interprets the two goats sacrificed during Lent, do they not also represent the two advents of Christ? They are equal and identical, for the Lord’s appearance remains unchanged. He will return in the same manner, to be acknowledged by those who have wounded Him. One of the goats, marked with crimson blood, reviled and scorned, tortured and pierced, was cast out of the city by the crowds for destruction, bearing unmistakable marks of the Lord’s suffering. The other goat, sacrificed for sin and presented to the priests of the Temple for consumption, clearly denotes the Second Coming. In that time, following the atonement for all wrongdoings, the priests of the spiritual temple, which is the Church, will partake of the Lord’s grace as if savoring a rich feast, while others will yearn for salvation.
