The Church Fathers on this verse

One Church Father comments on this verse

Ephraem the Syrian

4th centuryChurch Father

In order to caution the children of His people as they prepared to enter the promised land of Canaan, and to affirm His righteousness in punishing the Egyptians while being poised to bring judgment upon the Canaanites, God listed the numerous sins that had been committed by both the Egyptians and Canaanites. This served as a solemn warning to the Hebrews, reminding them that if they failed to heed this counsel and engaged in similar transgressions, they too would face expulsion from the land like the previous inhabitants.
