The Church Fathers on this verse

One Church Father comments on this verse

Ambrose of Milan

4th centuryChurch Father

The scribes and Pharisees presented to the Lord Jesus a woman who had been caught in the act of adultery, seeking to trap Him. If He chose to release her, they would argue that He was overlooking the violation of the Law. Conversely, if He passed judgment on her, it would contradict His mission of redemption, as He came to save sinners. They proclaimed, "This woman was taken in the very act of adultery. According to the Law of Moses, we are told that such offenders must be stoned. What is Your verdict on this matter?"
