This also introduces another important aspect, for in the same year, there was the forgiveness of debts and liberation for the Jews who had been in captivity. Thus, God deemed it appropriate to rest from labor during the jubilee. This term signifies freedom and deliverance. The fiftieth year is referred to as the jubilee. As it is written, ‘You shall number seven seven days, and shall proclaim with a trumpet voice throughout all your land on the tenth day of the month, on the day of purification’ (Leviticus 25:8-9), on the day when I extend mercy to you and forgive your transgressions, on that day you shall declare the year of release.
