What was conveyed through the prophet, "I will be your God, and you shall be My people," signifies that I will be the source of all that humanity genuinely yearns for: existence, health, sustenance, prosperity, glory, honor, peace, and every good thing in essence. The apostle's statement reflects this truth as well: God will be all in all (1 Cor. 15:28). He will be the focus of our longings—Whom we will see eternally, love without aversion, and worship without fatigue. This calling, this inclination of the heart, and this engagement will undoubtedly be a shared experience for all, just as eternal life itself will be universally shared.

Believers are called to mirror the nature of God's sanctuaries, which are sacred, clean, and occupied solely by that which is dedicated to the worship of God.

The primary divine intention, which brings salvation, is solely to promote goodness and righteousness, aimed at acquiring the Holy Spirit as an everlasting treasure that is invaluable and beyond measure. This is akin to the oil that was missing from the foolish virgins who neglected to pursue it, instead contenting themselves with merely tallying their outward deeds of virtue. Consequently, these virgins are deemed unwise because they overlooked the essential outcome of virtues, namely the grace of the Holy Spirit. Without this grace, salvation is unattainable for anyone, for the Holy Spirit enlivens every soul and elevates purity, shedding light on the sacred Triune Unity that resides mysteriously within us.

This divine presence within our souls, a manifestation of His omnipotence and the coexistence of our spirit with His Triune Creative Unity, is conferred upon us only through the reception of the Holy Spirit, who establishes within us a throne for God's presence alongside our spirit. This aligns with the unchanging declaration of the Lord: ‘I will dwell in them, and I will be like them, and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to Me My people’ (2 Corinthians 6:16).

Tichon of Zadonsk

The human heart is akin to a container tainted by sin and the odor of desire. Beloved in Christ, let us endeavor to purify this inner vessel, so our actions may be acceptable to God. The remarkable promise from God is that He desires to reside within our hearts: “I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people” (2 Cor. 6:16; Lev. 26:12). There is no greater, more precious, or more delightful treasure than having God inhabit our beings. Furthermore, there is no higher honor for humanity than to serve as the dwelling place of God! He resides in a pure soul as in His most cherished sanctuary. It is more gratifying for Him to inhabit a clean heart than any man-made structure, for within the soul lies the divine likeness of God.

Let us purify our hearts, dear Christians! May the image of God shine forth in us, revealing the inherent beauty of our souls, thus allowing us to be the temple of our God. “Therefore, beloved, having these promises, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God” (2 Cor. 7:1). “In the spirit of the prophet Jonah, I cry out, ‘My life, O Blessed One, be free from corruption, and save me, O Saviour of the world,’ proclaiming, ‘Glory be to Thee.’”

Philaret of Moscow (Drosdow)

19th centuryChurch Father

Even in the Old Testament, God clearly reveals the ultimate purpose of Christians as living sanctuaries for His presence: ‘I will dwell in them, and I will be like them, and I will be their God, and these shall be my people’ (Lev. 26:12). Imagine the splendor of a temple if those who occupied its space were entirely spiritual, living edifices filled with the Spirit of God. The radiance of Christ's truth would be magnificent! The prayers would yield abundant results! The strength of the sacraments would be evident! The sweetness of spiritual communion would be profound! The power of mutual spiritual support would be undeniable! How effortless miracles would be when there is a true need! This was the reality in the early Church, as the Apostle confidently declares to the Christians of his era, ‘ye are the Church of the living God’ (2 Cor. 6:16).

Vissarion (Nechaev)

19th centuryCommentator

It is akin to how God guided the Israelites as their leader and protector, manifesting as a pillar of fire and cloud to direct them through the wilderness and establishing a designated stopping point. The Lord assures them of His companionship not only throughout their journey in the desert but also upon their arrival in Canaan, where He will actively participate in their military efforts against the Canaanites until they are fully settled. He will dwell among them in the temple of Solomon. Beyond that, the Lord pledges to continuously walk with them, providing His vigilant oversight, akin to a caretaker who attentively follows children, observing all their actions and movements.
