What does it mean to understand Christ? He instructs His disciples to embody humility and to turn away from the pride of this world, welcoming and embracing little ones in the process. This action demonstrates His acceptance of those who are innocent, as He affirms, “For of such is the kingdom of God.” It is important to note that He did not simply refer to children as the sole heirs of the kingdom but spoke of “such as these,” indicating those who possess the same inherent simplicity and purity as children. A child exhibits no envy, holds no grudges, and, when corrected by a parent, does not run away; rather, even if she is poorly dressed, he prefers her company over that of a monarch.

Similarly, a virtuous person values the Church, his spiritual mother, above all earthly temptations and pleasures. This is why the Lord warmly welcomes such individuals, saying, “Come unto Me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden,” and He blesses them, proclaiming, “Come, ye blessed of My Father.” The kingdom of God alludes to both the proclamation of the gospel and the assurance of future blessings. Thus, anyone who receives the Divine message with the innocent trust of a child, free from skepticism or doubt, will enter the Kingdom of God and attain the rewards that he has already secured through faith.

The Lord refers to the preaching of the Gospel as ‘the Kingdom of God,’ which encompasses the revelations he received from the Father and shared with his disciples. This includes the commandments, the profound parables, and the doctrines that reflect the unchanging knowledge of God, namely, the eternal reality of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit - the one divine essence - as well as themes of lordship, the soul's immortality, the universal resurrection at the end of time, the rewards for those leading lives of piety and obedience to God, and the everlasting punishment for those who reject apostolic teachings and live wickedly.

The Saviour encapsulates all these teachings and related apostolic and prophetic truths with the term ‘the kingdom of God.’ He desires that we embrace this concept with sincerity, complete faith, and reverence, absorbing it as a child would accept the lessons of their teachers without question, thus gaining through faith and obedience a profound understanding of the Holy Scriptures and theological principles. We are called to faithfully uphold the doctrines and teachings imparted by our Saviour, His holy disciples, the Apostles, and the Ecumenical Councils, ensuring we neither add to nor diminish from them according to the rightful traditions established by our God-bearing fathers. May their holy prayers grant us the legacy of the redeemed. Amen.

During that time, mothers were bringing their children to Him for His blessing. For reasons unknown, the disciples tried to prevent them from approaching Him. The Lord intervened and stated that those who seek to be esteemed in the kingdom of God must possess a childlike spirit.

Many mothers, convinced that God hears the prayers of the righteous for others (cf. Num. 22:6), brought their children to Jesus Christ so He could bless them by laying His hands on them (Matt.; cf. Gen. 48:14). Due to the large crowd, not everyone was hopeful of receiving what they sought. However, their deep reverence for Christ made them content with even a single touch from the Lord upon their children (Mk.; Lk.). The disciples, perhaps thinking it inappropriate for the Lord to be troubled by what they considered a trivial matter, tried to prevent the mothers from approaching Jesus with their children. This unwise action caused the Lord to feel such distress that He became indignant with them (Mark).

When the children were finally allowed to come to Him at His command, Jesus did more than just touch them; He embraced them and blessed them (Mk.), demonstrating His profound love for the innocent and pure nature of children. He reiterated to the disciples that not only are these little ones among the most deserving in the kingdom of God, but also that adults may only enter this kingdom if they embrace it with the heart of a child (cf. Mt 18:3).

Jesus listened to the mothers' requests and the disciples' objections, and He told them, "Let the children come to me, and do not prevent them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these" (Matthew 19:14). The Kingdom of Heaven is reserved for the pure-hearted like children. Christ had already conveyed this to His Apostles when they inquired about who the greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven is (see Mk. 9:36-37). He reaffirmed that anyone who does not accept the Kingdom of God as a child will not enter it (Mk. 10:15). Do not obstruct them from approaching Me. Make these words a mantra, guardians of children, and reflect on them as you fulfill your responsibilities!

Ensure that you do not prevent your children from coming to Christ, and remain vigilant to protect them from being misled. Bear in mind that you are accountable for this congregation of Christ. However, it is not sufficient merely to avoid hindrance; you have the greater duty of guiding your children toward Christ. Do not be discouraged by the presence of a teacher of the law assigned to instruct the children on this matter. He imparts the Law of God, while you should embed this Law in their hearts; ensure they fulfill it; impress upon them that true happiness on earth arises from loving one's neighbor with selfless, forgiving love; and through your own life, demonstrate that living in Christ is the only way to experience true joy in the Kingdom of God, which also opens the gates of Heaven. If you find yourself unable to lead your children to Christ due to your lack of faith or indifference to acts of faith, then choose another avenue; do not take on the burden of responsibility, even if it is merely moral, that could lead you to the realization that it would be better for a millstone to be tied around your neck and for you to be thrown into the depths of the sea!

The apostles, believing that this was an obstacle in His sacred mission, tried to prevent mothers with children from approaching Him. However, the Savior promptly corrected their misguided enthusiasm, instructing them, "Let the children come to Me, and do not hinder them; for to such belongs the kingdom of heaven." After welcoming the children and gently placing His holy hands upon them, the Savior conveyed to the disciples and the crowd that "whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a child," meaning with pure innocence and selflessness, "shall not enter therein." Emulating the Savior’s example, the Church established by Him began to welcome children into its community through baptism, without waiting until they reached adulthood.

Michail (Lusin)

One must embrace the kingdom of God within their heart to be welcomed into it. This kingdom, which is internalized, represents Christ along with His grace and teachings. The kingdom to which individuals are welcomed is the community of believers in Christ, also known as His church. The phrase “as a child” refers to having a heart that is pure, innocent, and free from blame, akin to that of a little child, as noted in Matthew 18:3.
