Theophylact of Bulgaria

11th centuryChurch Father

When they witness Him performing undeniable miracles yet continue to blaspheme the Holy Spirit, that is, the miraculous acts empowered by the Holy Spirit, how can they expect forgiveness without true repentance? In the instance where they were tempted by the humanity of Christ, they might receive forgiveness even without repentance, as tempted souls; however, when they observed Him carrying out the works of God and still chose to speak against Him, what hope do they have for forgiveness if they do not repent?

Augustine of Hippo

5th centuryChurch Father

It is not the case that it is an act of blasphemy that is unforgivable, for even those sins can be pardoned if sincere repentance is genuinely sought.

Basil the Great

4th centuryChurch Father

What actions could lead one to 'blaspheme the Holy Spirit' (Mark 3:29; Matt. 12:31-32)? The answer is found in the blasphemy uttered by the Pharisees of that time, for whom this condemnation was directed. It is clear that even today, anyone who misattributes the works and results of the Holy Spirit to an enemy is committing the same offense. This occurs frequently, often when someone carelessly labels a diligent person as prideful, or wrongly accuses a zealous individual of anger, along with a variety of other wrongful attributions stemming from malicious assumptions.

Gregory the Theologian

The Spirit embodies goodness (cf. Ps. 142:10), righteousness (cf. Ps. 50:12), and sovereignty (cf. Ps. 50:14) by essence rather than by mere adaptation. He sanctifies yet is not Himself sanctified; He measures yet is not measured. He is One whose fullness is shared by all, yet He remains unconsumed, filling yet not being filled, containing yet not contained. He is inherited (cf. Eph. 1:13-14), exalted (cf. 1 Pet. 4:14), co-equal (cf. Matt. 28:19), and awe-inspiring (cf. Acts 5:1-10). Identified as the finger of God (cf. Lk. 11:20) and fire (cf. Matt. 3:11; Acts 2:3), He reveals His consubstantiality with God. The Spirit is the Creator (cf. Job 33:4), who brings about new life in baptism (cf. Titus 3:5) and resurrection (cf. Rom. 8:11). The Spirit possesses all knowledge (cf. Rom.

8:26; 1 Cor. 2:11; Eph. 3:4-5), teaching (cf. Nehem. 9:20; Is. 11:2; Jn. 14:26), guiding wherever He desires (cf. Jn. 3:8), directing (cf. Ps. 142:10; Jn. 16:13), conversing (cf. 2 Sam. 23:2; Ezek. 11:5; Matt. 10:20; Mk. 13:11; Jn. 16:13; 1 Tim. 4:1), sending (cf. Is. 61:1; Acts 13:4), distinguishing (cf. Acts 13:2; 1 Cor. 12:11), inspiring (cf. 2 Pet. 1:21), and testing. He reveals (cf. 1 Cor. 2:10; Eph. 3:5), illuminates (cf. Joel 2:28; Heb. 6:4), and is the source of life, or rather, He is the very light and life (cf. Job 27:3; Job 33:4; Ps. 103:30; Dan. 5:14; Eph. 2:1-10). He builds the temple (cf. 1 Cor. 3:16), imparts divine grace (cf. 1 Cor. 6:11; 1 Thess. 5:23; 2 Thess. 2:13; 1 Pet. 1:2), and brings to perfection (cf. Is. 11:2), so that He may be received in baptism and sought thereafter (cf. Mk. 1:8, 10). The Creator is indeed one with God.

How quickly can one succumb to this grave sin? It doesn't take long at all. Such sins include: an excessive reliance on God's grace; a sense of hopelessness or doubt regarding His goodness; a challenge to the established and revealed truths and a denial of the Orthodox Christian faith. Additionally, there is a jealousy towards the spiritual gifts bestowed by God upon others; a habitual engagement in sin and persistent anger; as well as the neglect of repentance until the end of one’s life. The paths to such error are many. Once you find yourself in one of these paths, regaining your footing becomes challenging, and you risk being drawn into a chasm that can consume you. Resistance to the truth often begins with minor doubts incited by malevolent words or texts.

If these doubts are not addressed, they can evolve into a profound disbelief and a stubborn adherence to it. This can lead one to despair without realizing it: a person might say, "I will repent," yet continue to sin. After a number of such instances, when they notice that genuine repentance eludes them, they might think: "So it is; I cannot control myself," and then surrender fully to sin. A torrent of sins accumulates, simultaneously permitting a flood of opposition to the evident workings of God's grace. When a person in this state finally contemplates reforming themselves, they are often overwhelmed by their multitude of sins, and the resistance to grace robs them of the resolve to approach the Lord, leading them to conclude, "My great iniquity is mine, that I might be abandoned." This is despair! Guard against the initial stirrings of disbelief and sinful inclinations, and you will avoid falling into this abyss.

Gladkow B.I.

19th centuryCommentator

Having established that Jesus expelled demons by the miraculous authority of the Holy Spirit, He declared, ‘All sins and blasphemies can be forgiven for mankind if they sincerely repent, but blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven. You have accused me of being a fraud and an enemy of God. I can pardon this if you turn from your ways; however, blasphemy against the Holy Spirit cannot be absolved, even for those who seek repentance. - This is because you did not recognize who Christ is, though you had already been given ample understanding of the Spirit. - The prophets spoke by the inspiration of the Spirit, and the Old Testament provided a clear understanding of Him.

- To claim ignorance of me is to deny the evident truth that casting out demons and effecting healings is the work of the Holy Spirit. Thus, your reproach is not only directed at me but also at the Holy Spirit. Consequently, your judgment, both in this life and the next, is unavoidable.’ Let no one believe that blasphemy against our Lord Jesus Christ can be forgiven. Christ lowered Himself to those who perceived Him merely as a man, unable to reconcile the divine nature within Him—only to those who did not acknowledge Him until the most profound and overt revelation of His divinity, which occurred at His Resurrection; thus, blasphemy against the Son of God is as unforgivable as blasphemy against the Holy Spirit.

Michail (Lusin)

19th centuryCommentator

However, he will face everlasting judgment; this eternal judgment, characterized by unending torment, is an inevitable result of the truth that the sin of blaspheming the Holy Spirit remains unforgiven both in this present age and in the age to come, meaning it will never be absolved.
