John Chrysostom

4th centuryChurch Father

Certainly, this reassurance was profound; yet, the apostles were not entirely prepared to understand its wisdom, thus there was a necessity for a comfort that would particularly bolster their spirits. Although the way the message is conveyed appears to address a broad perspective, it specifically pertains to their unique circumstances. The essence of the Savior's message is this: it is enough for your consolation that I, your Teacher and Master, endure the same scorn as you. Should you feel unsettled by this, remember that in due time, you shall be liberated from disgraceful accusations. What is it that troubles you? Is it the labels of deceivers and flatterers placed upon you? But take heart, for shortly, all will recognize you as saviors and benefactors to the world.

Time has a way of unveiling all that has been concealed; it will bring to light the falsehoods propagated by your adversaries alongside your true worth. If you demonstrate yourselves as saviors and benefactors through your actions, showcasing every virtue, the voices of your detractors will fade, and attention will shift to the reality of your works. Eventually, they will reveal themselves as slanderers, false witnesses, and evildoers, while you will radiate brighter than the sun, for time will ultimately affirm and proclaim your true nature more resoundingly than a trumpet, making your virtues known to all. Therefore, let not my words lead you to despair; instead, may they fill you with the anticipation of future blessings, for it is certain that your actions will not go unnoticed.

Theophylact of Bulgaria

11th centuryChurch Father

Take heart, for the truth shall ultimately come to light: the passage of time will unveil both your righteousness and the wickedness of your detractors. There is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed, and when they speak ill of you, they will eventually come to see your true character.

Jerome of Stridon

4th centuryChurch Father

How is it that the faults of many in this life often go unnoticed? This refers to a future time when the Lord will examine the hidden truths of humanity, illuminating the shadows and revealing the intentions of the heart. The implication is clear: do not be afraid of the wrath of persecutors or the outrage of blasphemers, for the day of judgment will arrive, when both your righteousness and their wickedness will be laid bare.

Euthymios Zigabenos

11th centuryCommentator

Do not fear those who insult and deride you. While this appears to address everyone, it is, in truth, a personal message. It speaks to the inherent righteousness of the Apostles that must eventually come to light. Although it may seem concealed at present, and you face scorn, there will come a time when it is unveiled and you will be esteemed by all. So, do not let the mockery of the moment trouble you; instead, nurture the hope that you will be exalted in the future. Let not current hardships dismay you; rather, allow the promise of what lies ahead to embolden your spirit.

Hilarius of Poitiers

4th centuryChurch Father

Do not let fear take hold of you regarding them. Everything will come to light on the day of reckoning. With these statements, the Lord references that day, which will expose the hidden desires of our hearts and disclose what we currently think is concealed. Thus, the Lord assures us that we need not be afraid of threats, malicious schemes, or the might of those who seek to harm us, for that day will reveal the emptiness and futility of such actions.

Theophan the Recluse

19th centuryChurch Father

Regardless of how much we attempt to conceal our transgressions in the present, such efforts will prove futile. The appointed time will arrive, and when that moment comes, everything will be exposed. What are we to do? There is no reason to cover up. If you have sinned, approach your spiritual leader and share your sin. Once you receive absolution, the sin will vanish as if it never existed. There will be nothing left to uncover or disclose. However, if you choose to conceal your sin without repentance, it will remain within you, resulting in something that will be revealed at the proper time for your correction. God has forewarned us of all this, so that we might, in this moment, be able to neutralize His just and formidable judgment upon us, the sinners.

Nikolaj Velimirovic

20th centuryChurch Father

There is an eye, my brethren, that never sleeps. That is the eye of God. In heaven there are more eyes, my brethren, than stars in the firmament. These are the eyes of the angels. Neither curtain nor walls nor darkness can hide any secret on earth from these eyes. Everything is open and clear before the All-Seeing God and His holy angels.

Abbot Panteleimon about the Trinity

19th centuryCommentator

Do not be afraid of those who seek to dishonor and mock you; after a time, all will acknowledge you as the saviors and benefactors of creation. For nothing concealed will remain undisclosed, and nothing hidden will not be acknowledged. The passage of time uncovers all that is obscured; it will bring to light the false accusations of your adversaries and reveal your righteousness. If you truly are lights and benefactors, individuals will not focus on the words of your detractors, but rather on the authenticity of your actions. Consequently, they will reveal themselves as false accusers. Therefore, boldly declare the message of salvation.

Gladkow B.I.

19th centuryCommentator

Proclaim openly, from the rooftops, everything I have shared with you in private; understand that your concealed and mysterious mission to illuminate the world with the light of truth will eventually be revealed and understood by everyone. Those of you who are scorned and oppressed will be acknowledged and exalted by all nations.

Michail (Lusin)

19th centuryCommentator

Do not fear them: the Lord reassures His followers regarding the trials and tribulations that they will encounter in their forthcoming ministry, providing comfort by suggesting that their faith and purity will ultimately be made evident and acknowledged both in this life and during the final judgment, as all concealed and obscure matters will come to light. "Just wait a little while, and everyone will recognize you as the saviors and benefactors of the world. Time uncovers all that is hidden; it will unveil the falsehoods of your adversaries and demonstrate your righteousness."

Paul Matwejewski

19th centuryCommentator

In the face of the slander that the apostles would face from those who were spiritually blind to the Gospel, the Lord provided them with comfort through His own example: A disciple is not greater than his teacher, nor is a servant greater than his master; it is the responsibility of the disciple to resemble his teacher, and the servant to embody his master. If the master of the house is referred to as Beelzebub, how much more so will members of his household be labeled? Do not fear them, for the truth will ultimately prevail; time will unveil both your righteousness and the wickedness of your accusers, for nothing that is hidden will remain concealed, and whatever is secret will be brought to light.
