John Chrysostom
Indeed, Christ points out that your current audacious conduct reveals that you act with the same purpose. Although you claim, under the guise of accusing your ancestors, that you wouldn't have allied yourself with them had you lived during their time, it is clear what motive lies behind your words. Therefore, Christ, unveiling this motive, interprets it in these terms. When He stated that you assert, "If we had been in the days of our fathers, we would not have been their collaborators in the blood of the prophets," He added, “Thus you bear witness against yourselves that you are the descendants of those who persecuted the prophets” (vv. 30, 31). However, what crime is it to be a descendant of a murderer if that descendant does not share in the father’s intent? None at all. Thus, it is evident that Christ articulates this to reveal their involvement in the wicked deeds of their forebears. This is further confirmed by His subsequent declaration, “You serpents, you brood of vipers” (v. 33).
