It is notable that while half of the young men engaged in labor, the other half stood ready to fight, and those who worked were equipped with swords. The adversary, skilled in his deceit and fierce in his malevolence against the Church, necessitates that not only the proclaimers of truth but also God's people must remain vigilant against his schemes, as if in a state of readiness for battle. Thus, the builders are armed with swords at their sides when those who commit to good deeds and rightly guide those in their care—essentially laying living stones in the construction of the holy city—seek to shield themselves from the perils of a careless life through the sharpness of God's Word.

It is essential to recognize that in the days of David and Solomon's city, there was no mention of armed builders facing foes. Yet, a city brought low by its iniquities is restored with immense effort, primarily because the spiritual edifice associated with the salvation of souls is such that upon our rebirth in baptism through faith and the confession of the Most Holy Trinity, we become, by divine grace, His city and His dwelling without any effort on our part. However, should we, after being cleansed in the sacred waters, succumb to sin through the devil's temptations, and the conquering foe undermines our virtue's defenses with the fires of vice, it becomes essential for us to reconstruct those good works we have lost with increased diligence in prayer, self-denial, vigilance, charity, and a life of discipline. It is often more challenging for us to break free from familiar vices than from those that are unfamiliar, making it easier to reject unknown earthly pleasures than to renounce what we have assimilated into our very being.
