Numerous authors characterize prayer as the elevation of the mind and heart toward God, accompanied by the request for our needs in alignment with His will, through the mediation of Jesus Christ. Nevertheless, this spiritual elevation does not rule out the use of spoken words and physical gestures. Although every deep movement of our spirit is fully known to God, it is inherent to human nature that a heart filled with spiritual feelings expresses its condition outwardly, whether through spoken words (Matthew 12:34) or through various physical actions (1 Sam. 1:12-13), such as complete prostration on the ground.
