This marks the inaugural mention of the Lord's directive to summon all the descendants of Levi for the service of the Tabernacle. Although earlier references suggest this calling, such as in Exodus 6:14-25, where only the tribe of Levi is detailed among the clans of Israel after a brief mention of the two older brothers, Reuben and Simeon. In Exodus 32:26-29, Moses acknowledges the fervor of the Levi tribe in fulfilling God’s work, stating, "Today commit your hands to the Lord." Additionally, in Exodus 38:21, the Levitical clan plays a crucial role in accounting for the materials designated for the Tabernacle under Ithamar's oversight. Moreover, Leviticus 25:32-33 foreshadows their future importance more distinctly. In this passage, we observe the entire tribe of Levi being earnestly summoned for the exclusive devotion to God within the Tabernacle, with a stern warning against interference by any other tribes, under the threat of death.
