The calculation revealed that all the tribes, with the exception of Levi, numbered 603,500 males aged 20 and older. This total indicated that the entire population likely exceeded 2 million individuals. This census was derived from the amount of tribute collected, with each male contributing half a shekel for the support of the Tabernacle, while women and children were excluded from this count. The practice of such enumeration became so embedded in the culture that when the Romans attempted to impose a more precise system during Herod's reign, it sparked widespread unrest among the people.
