Cyrill of Alexandria

They assembled in large numbers around the encampment, collecting the shellfish from the earth with immense delight. They consumed them with a ferocity akin to wild animals, showing no concern for fullness or the appeasement of their hunger. Glaphyrs on the Exodus. Of the manna and the shellfish.

Gregory of Nyssa

4th centuryChurch Father

God, while fulfilling their desires, imparts wisdom by illustrating that such desires can be harmful. He sends a swarm of birds that cover the sky, descending upon the camp. The abundance of their catch indulges the craving for meat, yet their excessive feasting transforms their bodies into caustic substances, leading them to suffering and death. This powerful lesson served to enlighten both them and those who witnessed the event, guiding the people toward understanding.
