2 Church Fathers comment on this verse

Cyrill of Alexandria

5th centuryChurch Father

Is there still uncertainty regarding the one who is fearful, avoids effort, and possesses weak faith, who leads others astray with malicious speech, ultimately forfeiting their inheritance and hope in God? In contrast, the person who is brave and steadfast rests in hope and is counted among God's friends. This point is well established. Consequently, as mentioned earlier, those who indulge in worldly pleasures are unfit to be part of the spiritual community.

Ephraem the Syrian

4th centuryChurch Father

Death struck the spies first for preventing the people from claiming the land they so deeply desired; the spies unleashed the gate of the grave for the six hundred thousand who followed them down into its depths.
