Similar to cattle straying from their herd, they abandoned the worship of God and led other wicked individuals to follow them in their departure. However, due to their arrogance, they faced divine retribution: the earth opened its mouth and swallowed the haughty individuals along with their families, their dwellings, and their belongings.

Korah, Dathan, and Abiron, who revolted against Moses and Aaron the high priest, sought to seize the privilege of offering sacrifices for themselves. Their rebellion was swiftly met with divine retribution: the ground opened up and swallowed them whole. Furthermore, God's wrath extended beyond the instigators, as the fire from the Lord quickly consumed the two hundred and fifty individuals who participated in their folly, serving as a powerful reminder that all efforts by the wicked to undermine God's established order ultimately stand in opposition to the Lord.

The insurrection arose from the excesses of the heart, which often precedes perilous and destructive outcomes. We observe that a person may become provoked and prone to wrath, either through the malevolent deeds of others or hurtful words. This is exemplified by Dathan and Abiron, who incited the assembly and fervently sought recognition for themselves rather than for Moses and Aaron. Consequently, they faced divine retribution for inciting the righteous to anger, driven by jealousy that was clearly offensive to the Lord. This response serves to glorify the Lord, for He promises to safeguard His servants. The ground opened up and swallowed Dathan while engulfing the followers of Abiron.

As recorded in the Book of Numbers, this transpired visibly for all to see, a striking judgment on those who, with the venomous sting of envy, attempted to seize the grace granted to Aaron and Moses, seeking to attain the honor that only God’s mercy had endowed upon them unrightfully. A similar fate awaited them due to the singular cause of their division: those who placed their trust in worldly wisdom were consumed by the earth, a fitting punishment that attests to their transgressions.
