The Church Fathers on this verse

2 Church Fathers comment on this verse

Justin Martyr

2nd centuryChurch Father

In the beginning, prior to all creation, God emanated from Himself a certain intelligent force, referred to by the Holy Spirit as the Glory of the Lord, Son, Wisdom, Angel, God, Lord, and Word. He identified Himself as the Commander of the heavenly host when He manifested as a man to Joshua (Num. 5:14-15). These various titles reflect both His obedience to the Father's will and His origin in accordance with the Father's intentions.
