The Church Fathers on this verse

Numbers 16:9Meaning & Commentary from the Church Fathers

Is it a small thing unto you, that the God of Israel hath spared you from all the people, and joined you to himself, that you should serve him in the service of the tabernacle, and should stand before the congregation of the people, and should minister to him?

Korah, Abiron, and Dathan were all members of the tribe of Levi, tasked with the responsibilities of the sacred tabernacle as ordained by God. However, they were driven by a desire for the honor that belonged to Moses and Aaron, seeking glory for themselves despite not being called by God to such positions. The faithful Moses, demonstrating his characteristic humility, admonished them compassionately, not fully grasping the severe consequences that awaited them. He stated, "Let it be done unto you, ye sons of Levi." He continued, "Is it not enough that the God of all humanity has chosen you for such a noble and esteemed service?"

Korah, Dathan, and Abiron, who rose up against Moses and Aaron the priest and sought to seize the sacred right of offering sacrifices for themselves, faced swift retribution for their rebellion. The earth opened and swallowed them while they were still alive, and the anger of the Lord struck not only the instigators but also swiftly consumed the two hundred and fifty others who conspired with them in this folly. This serves as a powerful reminder that any efforts by the unrighteous to undermine the Divine order are ultimately against God.

The insurrection stemmed from an excess of desire, which often leads to perilous and destructive outcomes. It is observed that a person may become agitated and prone to wrath, either due to the malicious actions of others or harsh remarks. This scenario reflects the situation involving Dathan and Abiron, who incited the congregation and fervently sought glory for themselves rather than for Moses and Aaron. Consequently, they faced divine retribution for provoking the righteous to anger, speaking out of jealousy that was well known to displease the Lord. This situation serves to glorify the Lord, as He proclaims He will safeguard His servants. The earth opened up and engulfed Dathan, while the host of Abiron was buried beneath.

As noted in the Book of Numbers, this event occurred before all who witnessed it, aimed at those who, driven by the venomous bite of envy, attempted to usurp the grace granted to Aaron and Moses, seeking to attain for themselves the honor that was clearly a result of God’s mercy towards them. Their fate was similar, for the discord they caused stemmed from a singular source: those who relied on earthly wisdom were consumed by the ground itself, rendering their punishment a testament to their wrongful deeds.
