One Church Father comments on this verse

Cyrill of Alexandria

5th centuryChurch Father

Although Moses could have demonstrated courage in response to such statements, he exhibited a lack of fortitude when he said: “Hearken, ye disobedient, shall we draw water for you out of this rock?” Therefore, it is essential to understand how the water was provided. When the elders of the people assembled and Aaron stood among them, words were directed towards the rock, and Moses struck it twice. This event mirrors how, when the elders and priests convened, the children of Israel, embodying Moses, began to speak against Christ, bringing accusations before Pilate and wickedly shouting: “take, take, crucify Him!” (John 19:15).
