Balaam said to him: Build me here seven altars, and prepare as many calves, and the same number of rams.
וַיֹּ֤אמֶר בִּלְעָם֙ אֶל־בָּלָ֔ק בְּנֵה־לִ֥י בָזֶ֖ה שִׁבְעָ֣ה מִזְבְּחֹ֑ת וְהָכֵ֥ן לִי֙ בָּזֶ֔ה שִׁבְעָ֥ה פָרִ֖ים וְשִׁבְעָ֥ה אֵילִֽים׃
One Church Father comments on this verse
He then instructs that the seven altars and offerings be arranged. Clearly, he ought to have departed, yet due to his mental frailty and wavering discernment, he believed he could defy God's intentions. Caught in the tumult of his thoughts, he desired one thing while expressing another.
