In Exodus 13, we have previously noted that the firstborn children in ancient societies were viewed as particularly consecrated to God within the lineage of Eber, especially among Abraham's descendants. Following a parent's death, these firstborns held a sacred status, and on that fateful night when the firstborns of Egypt were struck down, they became a sacrificial offering to secure Israel's deliverance. The firstborns were returned to the families of Israel based on two stipulations: first, that a payment in silver be made (Num. 18:15, 16), and second, that in exchange for the priestly duties of the firstborns, the entire tribe of Levi would be designated for service. The principles outlined in Exodus 13 are hereby reiterated, highlighting that the Levites are dedicated to the Lord.
