The Church Fathers on this verse

3 Church Fathers comment on this verse

Cyrill of Alexandria

5th centuryChurch Father

Since the count of the firstborn among the people was discovered to be two hundred seventy-three greater, the Lawgiver decided that a redemption must be provided for them to the tribe of Levi. This arrangement allowed the Levites to carry out the priestly duties and sacred ministries on their behalf, ensuring that this redemption served as a provision for their ongoing intercession.

Ephraem the Syrian

4th centuryChurch Father

It is likely that Aaron personally crafted this shekel and affixed his seal to it; the total count of Levites in service amounted to seven thousand eighty-five.

Jerome of Stridon

4th centuryChurch Father

All firstborns among humanity are redeemed, and with the universal nature of birth being identical, the cost remains constant—modest enough that it neither troubles the affluent nor overburdens the less fortunate.
