Cyrill of Alexandria
Concerning widows and widowers, he provides distinct definitions and wisely asserts that they must honor their commitments without exception. He consistently reproaches those who are free and outside of marital bonds for failing to uphold their promises. Conversely, he rightly allows for exceptions for those in less favorable situations, who may find themselves powerless or under the authority of others. In such instances, it is the responsibility of the leaders—namely, the father and husband—who have sanctioned the vows of those under their jurisdiction, to act righteously and fulfill the promises made. Should they refuse, he advocates for the forgiveness of sins because that which is dedicated to God ought to arise from a willing heart rather than through coercion, as stated in Numbers 30:10-17.
