In addressing the topics of widows and widowers, distinct definitions are provided, emphasizing the importance of honoring promises. He rightly admonishes those who are free and outside the covenant of marriage for failing to uphold their commitments. However, he grants an appropriate allowance for individuals who are in vulnerable situations and under the authority of others. In these instances, the leaders—namely the father and husband—who have approved the vows of those under their guardianship are deemed to commit an offense if they refuse to honor their pledges. If they do not give their consent, he indicates that there is a release from sins, as what is dedicated to God ought to stem from genuine free will rather than coercion (Num. 30:10-17).
