Jerome of Stridon
The forty-first encampment signifies the mountains associated with those who journey and is positioned in sight of Mount Nebo, where Moses meets his end and is laid to rest after having gazed upon the promised land. Nebo symbolizes the culmination where the law reaches its conclusion, and its memory is not retained. In contrast, the grace found in the Gospel permeates endlessly: its message has been proclaimed to all nations, and its echoes reach the farthest corners of the earth (Ps. 18). Yet, it is important to note that while the sojourners reside upon the heights, there remains a necessity for refinement. After traversing many mountains, we descend into the valleys of Moab and the tributaries of the Jordan River, illustrating a descent. For as we have repeatedly observed, there is nothing more perilous than the dangers of ambition, pride, and arrogance in one’s awareness of their own virtues.
