Go up into this mountain Abarim, (that is to say, of passages,) unto mount Nebo, which is in the land of Moab over against Jericho: and see the land of Chanaan, which I will deliver to the children of Israel to possess, and die thou in the mountain.

Athanasius the Great

The esteemed Moses, who had previously concealed himself from Pharaoh and sought refuge in Midian, felt no fear upon receiving the command, "Go up into Egypt" (Ex. 4:19). When he was instructed once more to ascend the mountain Abarim and meet his end, he did not hesitate but approached with joy.

This illustrates to us the prophets and the law, who envisioned the arrival of Immanuel through symbols, yet did not experience the moment of His coming; they perceived the invitation extended to the Gentiles, but were unable to enter the spiritual fold of the gospel. “All the prophets and the law unto John have spoken” (Matt. 11:13).
