Alongside the blue draperies adorning the basin, there was also a purple fabric. The basin symbolizes sacred baptism, which purifies us through holy waters for the forgiveness of sins and grants us entry into the Kingdom of Heaven; baptism descends from above, from the divine realm: the blue hue subtly alludes to this truth. Do you not perceive that I am expressing the utmost that can be conveyed in such a profound spiritual context?

Theodoret of Cyrus

5th centuryChurch Father

Why did the Lord ordain that certain sacred vessels be draped in blue while others in scarlet? The treasured vessels were entirely covered in blue, symbolizing the hue of the heavens. Thus, what lay concealed beneath the veil was to be enveloped in blue, whereas the outer elements were to be covered in scarlet and similar colors, as there is no retribution from heaven; instead, the earth bears the consequences for transgressing the laws. The scarlet fabric represents the earthly kingdom, while the kingdom of God is eternal and unchanging. Consequently, the items outside the tabernacle were shrouded with both scarlet and blue veils.

Remembering the tribe of Kohath, the Lord instructed that first, the priests should cover the tabernacle and other vessels with these veils upon entering the sanctuary, and only then could the descendants of Kohath carry them, for encountering the sacred and unseen might result in their destruction from the overwhelming vision.
