Cyrill of Alexandria
Through the language of the curse, it is quite apparent who was 'under an oath' by virtue of being executed on a tree: 'For it is written, Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree' (Galatians 3:13; Deuteronomy 21:23). Therefore, Immanuel, being divine by nature, when He delves into the depths of human understanding, will convict those burdened by sin with punishment, while He will manifest the fruitfulness of the innocent; for I believe this signifies 'and shall be filled with seed,' as this physical state represents the soul's abundance. Palladius, you have articulated this excellently. Cyril adds that immorality and earthly desires corrupt humanity and sever one’s relationship with God, for 'those who live according to the flesh cannot please God' (Romans 8:8). The term flesh, in my view, denotes the carnal mindset; thus, the text can be rightly comprehended.
