Cyrill of Alexandria
Through the statements of the curse, it becomes clear who was “under an oath” because He was suspended on a tree: “For it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree” (Galatians 3:13; Deuteronomy 21:23). Therefore, Immanuel, who is divine by nature, when He reaches into the depths of human understanding, will convict those guilty of sin through judgment, yet He will demonstrate the fruitfulness of the innocent; for this implies “and shall be impregnated with seed”: as this physical condition reflects the soul’s abundance. Palladius, you have spoken wisely. Cyril, immorality and the desires of the flesh defile humanity and separate them from fellowship with God: for “they that live after the flesh cannot please God” (Rom. 8:8). I interpret the flesh as referring to the earthly mindset, which allows the written word to be properly understood.
