As a person who has toiled without reward in the past, he will lament the loss of his efforts. This seems to reflect the meaning behind the phrase, “The days of old shall not be numbered with him.” A similar message is conveyed by Ezekiel: “The righteousness of a righteous man shall not save in the day of his offense, neither shall the lawless man for his iniquity fall in the day of his turning from his iniquity, neither shall the righteous man in the day of his transgression remain alive for his righteousness” (Ezekiel 33:12). Thus, if the sanctified among their deeds were to pollute themselves, they would forfeit what they previously accomplished; however, this loss can be restored.

The lamb is also offered alongside the birds so that Christ may be recognized in all aspects: in the birds as emanating from above and from heaven, and in the lamb as coming from below and from the earth; for “the Word, being God by nature, became flesh” (John 1:14). Nevertheless, He has always been and remains God; He rescues us from the shadow of the law, instills in our hearts the knowledge of His commandments, and truly sanctifies us, cleansing us with His “blood,” as stated in the Scriptures (Rom. 5:9).
