Psalms 151

Old TestamentTheosis · English Bible

1This Psalm is a genuine one of David, though supernumerary, composed when he fought in single combat with Goliad. I was small among my brethren, and youngest in my father's house: I tended my father's sheep. 2My hands formed a musical instrument, and my fingers tuned a psaltery. 3And who shall tell my Lord? the Lord himself, he himself hears. 4He sent forth his angel, and took me from my father's sheep, and he anointed me with the oil of his anointing. 5My brothers were handsome and tall; but the Lord did not take pleasure in them. 6I went forth to meet the Philistine; and he cursed me by his idols. 7But I drew his own sword, and beheaded him, and removed reproach from the children of Israel.

David, renowned for his excellence and accomplishments, initially faced humiliation from his father Jesse, who dismissed him based solely on his seemingly insignificant stature. Consequently, he was assigned the role of a shepherd—not an exemplary one, but rather an inadequate shepherd, engaged in the humble tasks of tending to sheep, which are characteristic of the lesser shepherds. Jesse's treatment of David starkly revealed his disdain. Yet, God elevated him from on high, placing him in a position akin to that of a king’s son, allowing him to learn the art of shepherding—the very foundation of his future reign over humanity. God prepared David by teaching him vigilance, combat skills, and endurance during perilous times for the flock. He learned to confront lions, bears, and other threats; to withstand hunger, cold, and heat; and to lead his flock to pasture, shade, and water. He became adept at calling and guiding them with a rod, voice, song, or horn, providing comfort and protection. His responsibilities included directing their way of life, safeguarding them from dangers, and tending to their welfare, all aimed at ensuring that the sheep grew strong, healthy, and vigorous.
