Psalms 151

Old TestamentTheosis · English Bible

1This Psalm is a genuine one of David, though supernumerary, composed when he fought in single combat with Goliad. I was small among my brethren, and youngest in my father's house: I tended my father's sheep. 2My hands formed a musical instrument, and my fingers tuned a psaltery. 3And who shall tell my Lord? the Lord himself, he himself hears. 4He sent forth his angel, and took me from my father's sheep, and he anointed me with the oil of his anointing. 5My brothers were handsome and tall; but the Lord did not take pleasure in them. 6I went forth to meet the Philistine; and he cursed me by his idols. 7But I drew his own sword, and beheaded him, and removed reproach from the children of Israel.

David articulates his wisdom with a depth and clarity that surpasses others: ‘My hands have made the organ, and my fingers have arranged the psalter.’ Wisdom, then, can be understood as the harmonious blend of words and actions. Among the various branches of knowledge, the study of structure stands out as the highest philosophical endeavor, as it brings together all aspects of philosophical beauty in coherent unity. Thus, those who possess insight into the essence of things also experience a profound understanding of all that exists. David employed his hands and the strength of his labor for the organ, while he used his fingers and his understanding of structure for the psalter; the organ, being more basic and robust, contrasts with the psalter, which is intricate and refined, necessitating a more profound level of knowledge. In the most elevated sense, the hands symbolize the active virtue that shapes a virtuous, orderly, and consistent life, akin to an organ. The fingers, on the other hand, represent the speculative principles and rational thoughts that form the psalter, reflecting the mental discernment that receives divine inspiration from above, and, with the guidance of the Holy Spirit, crafts melodious praises.
